Pontiac Solstice: The Sexy Car

General Motors introduced this slick and excellent quality sports car back in the year 2004. The sports car made its first appearance in the international auto show in North America.

First Production

Initial production of Pontiac Solstice roadster commenced at Wilmington, in the state of Delaware in United States. Its first model was designed in mid-2005 and that was meant to be marketed in the year 2006. Though production was scheduled for the second quarter of 2005, the actual production was considerably delayed and finally started in the last quarter of the year.

Design Features

In designing the Pontiac Solstice, manufacturers remained quite faithful to their earlier concept adopted during production of the 2002 model of Solstice. But this was for the 2006 model. A new hardtop model of the vehicle, targa 2009, was announced two years later during 2008.

Common Platform

Platform for Pontiac Solstice is GM Kappa that is also the accepted platform for various other vehicles like the Saturn Sky, Daewoo G2X and Opel GT.

Award Winning Model

2006 model of Pontiac Solstice was special on many counts. It was nominated as the car of the year for North America. Another feather in their cap was the nomination of AJAC same year.

Financial Hit

Besides winning some major awards, the Pontiac Solace was a big hit financially as well. Manufacturers and dealers pocketed over seven thousand orders within ten days of marketing the car. Six thousand additional orders followed even before the winter arriving. General Motors had to reschedule its production target of first year from 7,000 to 10,000 in the face of such huge demands of buyers.

Recession and Aftermath

Unfortunately, despite such success; General Motors were forced to shut down their Pontiac division on the wake of the global economic recession that hit most economies adversely in 2008. Under United States Government pressure; the Wilmington Assembly plant that assembled Pontiac Solace finally drew shutters in the month of July 2009.
