Nissan Qashqai: Tough As Nails

Birth of the Quashqai

Nissan in 2007 brought into foray the compact Crossover Utility Vehicle, the Nissan Qashqai. It is a J-segment car in Europe. It is known as the Nissan Dualis in Japan and Australia. The Qashqai came as the small SUV offering pitted against the body-on-frame Mistral/ Terrano II. Its P32L automobile platform will also be used in other future Nissan CUV’s.

The name Qashqai (pronounced as Cash’ki) came from the semi-nomadic tribe living on the South-western side of Iran. For the China market they had considered releasing the same car in the Chinese version of CCUV. In Australia the company uses the name Dualis taken from the Japanese market. They were apprehensive about the name being pronounced by the Australians as “cash cow”.

From December 2006, the Qashqai has been manufactured at the NMUK Sunderland, Tyne and Wear plant. It was the first model which was styled by the Nissan Design Europe team in London. The engineering was developed by the NTCE in Cranfield, Bedfordshire. The 2006 Paris Moto Show saw it global launch.

Sales of Qashqai

Reports towards the end of 2007 showed the below given sales figures:

- 100,000 Nissan Qashqai’ s in Europe

- UK sold 17,554 units

- Russia sold 15,376 units

- Italy sold 10,746 units

Nissan has forecast to sell the 500,000th Quashqai by end 2009, before it comes out with its facelift 2010 model year. The Qashqai is also exported to the Middle East and other overseas market.

The new generation Qashqai will move to Nissan Russian plant in St. Petersburg in 2014. This move is made to free the assembling capabilities of the Nissan UK plant. The Nissan Motor Co., on September 13, 2012, called back 51,000 cars worldwide to look into a reported steering wheel problem. This affected the Nissan’s Qashqai, Qashqai+2 and NV200 models.
