Nissan GTR: A Brief History

Nissan GTR, a take off from the Skyline GTR

The sports car Nissan GTR was produced and released in Japan on 6 December 2007. It was released in Canada and United States on 7 July 2008. It was made available to the rest of the markets in March 2009.

A high performance version of the Skyline sedan called the Skyline GTR was produced by Nissan twice. The first time, it was produced during 1969-1974 and the second time, during 1989-2002. This car proved iconic for Nissan achieving fame both on road and on track. The Nissan GTR takes inspiration from the Skyline GTR. It has the same four wheel drive, twin turbo 6 cylinder engines and the signature four round tail lights. However, the Skyline GTR served only as an inspiration. The new Nissan GTR had a completely new design from the predecessor.

The initial four-wheel steering HICAS was removed from the Nissan GTR design. The earlier straight-6 RB26DETT engine is replaced with new V6 VR38DETT engine. Because of the heritage it enjoys, the chassis code for the all the new GTR’s is called CBA-235 or ‘R35’. CBA signifies the prefix for emission standard. The GTR has also managed to retain the Skyline’s nickname Godzilla, which was given to it by the Australian motoring publication Wheels in the July 1989 edition.
