Nissan GT-R: A Brief History

The supercar, Nissan GT-R is a sports car that exhibits extreme performance was released first in Japan. This anticipated release happened on December 6, 2007. It was released in the United States and Canada a year later on July 7, 2008. It then had a global release in March 2009.

The iconic engine that powers the Nissan GT-R is the VR38DETT 3,799 cc DOHC V6 that has a cylinder bores sprayed by plasma transferred wire arc. The forced induction is provided for by turbochargers from Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI). The models that were manufactured from 2007 to 2010 give an engine output of 434 lb·ft @ 3200–5200 rpm and 434 lb·ft @ 3200–5200 rpm. This engine is certified by the California Air Resources Board Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV). There are airbags at the side curtains with a curb that weighs 3,827 lbs that is brought about with the help of jig welded steel chassis along with aluminum that is used for the doors, trunk and hood.

The Aichi Machine Industry made six-speed BorgWarner designed semi-automated transmission that is a dual clutch is mounted at the rear. This is coupled with the ATTESA E-TS system that powers all the four wheels and with the added Nissan’s Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC-R) it provided great stability.

Depending on the requirements, one can select from a variation of three shift modes. The start of 2010 saw some improvements to the engine and the torque. The power of the engine was improved to 390 kW at 6400 rpm and torque was improved to 612 N-m at 3200–6000 rpm. There was another round of improvement in 2012 with the engine output of 542 hp at 6400 rpm and 628 N-m at 3200–5800 rpm.

It is rumored that the Nissan GT-R may even be offered as a hybrid in the near future, but Nissan hasn’t given an official word on it quite yet.
