Land Rover Freelander: What to Look Out For When Buying

The Land Rover Freelander is a CUV produced by Land Rover- the British manufacturer. It’s marketed in both 4-wheel and 2-wheel drive versions, and the current generation models are sold as Freelander 2 in Europe and LR2 in North America. It has got a Unibody-monocoque structur, which is very similar to other “soft-roaders” across the range. It is very different from the other traditional SUVs that are built with on-frame designs.

Rover Group decided to introduce compact SUVs in the late 1980s. Later, Rover Group had limited the production of compact SUVs keeping the development budget in mind. In fact, they were looking for a partner to develop the SUVs. Rover’s partner Honda had declined to develop SUVs together, and later decided to develop its own CR-V launched in the year 1997.

Rover decided to stay with CB40, using components and existing parts. In the year 1994, BMW took over Rover, and they got enough capital to develop CB40 project.

Later, the Freelander was launched in the year 1997 and it went on to become Europe’s best-selling 4-wheel drive compact SUV until 2002. The 2005 models are the Last Freelander’s sold in North America.

Tata group acquired JLR in India, and currently, all the Jaguar Landrover models are sold in Indian markets in collaboration with Tata Motors.
