Lada Niva: Getting Your First Off-Road Vehicle

The VAZ-2121 or Lada Niva, an off road motor vehicle introduced from AvtoVAZ, a Russian manufacturer earlier known as Soviet. The name was originated from Russian word that is Лада Нива; Niva (нива) and the meaning of this word is crop field. It was also advertised as the Bognor Diva in Uruguay, Lada Taiga in Austria and Lada Sport in Iceland and is offered as the Lada 4x4 in most of the markets since 2009.

It was considered as one of the primary mass production off road motor vehicles that featured an independent coil suspension and front suspension and a uni-body architecture (in 1995, the initial was GAZ-M-72). It is also an ancestor to recent crossover SUV’s that almost all follow this arrangement. Emergency and pickup van versions are manufactured by VAZInterService.

Specifications of The Lada Niva

In the critical form, the Lada Niva has a petrol engine with four cylinders and a carbureted overhead cam of 1.6 liter that produced 72 HP (54 kW) and 93 lb.ft (126 N.m), full time 4-wheel drive and a 4 or 5 speed manual transmission. The 4 wheel drive system makes use of 3 differentials such as rear, front and center. There is unavailability of locking hubs in this car. The transfer case includes a middle differential lock lever and a low or high range selector lever. The lower range can be chosen with the middle differential unlocked or locked. The original Lada Niva has speed of approximately 80 mph (130 km/h) which is considered as a maximum one and can sail at 56 mph (90 km/h) while using petrol at 34.2 mpg-imp, 28.5 mpg-US (8.25 L/100 km). The towing capacity of this car is ranked for up to 1900 lb (860 kg).
