Ford Escape more a crossover compact

In the year 2000 the Ford Company launched the Escape a compact crossover as 2001 model year. It was priced below the Ford Explorer. Even though it is a crossover, the company markets it in series of its SUV’s like Escape, Explorer and Expedition. In Europe it was sold under the name of Ford Maverick. There it was jointly developed with Mazda and release along with the Mazda Tribute. Starting with the 2005 model year in the U.S., the company’s Mercury division launched the luxury version called the Mariner. The brand however died in October 2010.

Changes in the company affect the Ford

The Mazda 626 used the Mazda GF platform. This platform was based for the design of Ford CD2 platform. The Ford CD2 platform was used as the base from 2001-2012 for the Escape. 23 June 2011 saw the official announcement to end the second generation Escape in 2011. It also announced a move of the production unit to Louisville Assembly Plant in Louisville, Kentucky. There it was succeeded by the American version of the European CUV, Ford Kuga.

The Third generation Escape was based on the Global C platform. It was debuted in April 2012 as a 2013 model year. The first hybrid SUV from this stable was released in 2004. This model was discontinued in 2012. Ford introduced in 2013 the Escape which used turbocharged EcoBoost technology. This gave a higher fuel economy than the 2012 hybrid version. Since 2005 a total of 122,850 Escape hybrids have been manufactured.
