Chery Tiggo: The Beginner’s Guide

Chery Automobile, the Chinese auto manufacturer rolled out its version of the compact crossover (CUV), the very suave Chery Tiggo in 2006. There are innumerable styling cues, which come very close to the other CUVs in design especially the Toyota RAV4.

The Chery Tiggo in the latter half of 2007, was assembled in Uruguay as a result of the collaboration between Chery Sutomobile and Socme, an Argentinian company. The aim of this collaboration was to export the cars to Brazil and Argentina. A 50% and 30% share of the locally-made components was required to get a zero tariff status within Mercosur. The Tiggo is also imported by the Italian company, DR Motors, and known as DR5.

During the second half of 2008, the 2.0 L version was assembled in Egypt under the brand name of Speranza. This is the latest addition to the line of Chery cars assembled in Egypt (Eastar, A1 and A5) by Aboul-Fotouh (an ex-BMW dealer in Egypt).

The 2011 Tiggo was released in September 2010 in China. This new model was structured on the exact same platform as the Tiggo3. It had a 1.6 liter engine with mechanical supercharger pumping out 110kw (148hp, 150PS) at 550 rpm and 205 N-m torsion in the range of 3500, and 4500 RPM.

During October 2011, the ‘11 Tiggo fared poorly at the offset crash test conducted by the ANCAP. A low rating of two out of five stars was given to it, and this rating did not include the side impact test. On the request of the manufacturer, the side impact test was conducted where the car was awarded the highest rating ever achieved in the side impact test. This further lowered the score, unanticipated by the ANCAP.
