Aston Martin DB5: A James Bond’s Car?

The evolution of the DB4’s final series, the DB5 was designed by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, an Italian coachbuilder and was released in 1963. This car is a luxury grand Tourer from the manufacturing company, Aston Martin. The series of this car, DB, was named to honor the head of the company during 1947-1972, David Brown and has gained a huge popularity being the first cinematic car. An Aston Martin was used by James Bond in his movie Goldfinger, released in 1964.

Design of the Car

The design of the DB5 model of the Aston Martin is different from the DB4 version in many aspects as discussed below.

The capacity of the aluminium-made engine of the car was increased to 4.0L from 3.7L. 3 SU carburetors and a new and solid ZF transmission of 5-speed gear were added. The engine producing 282bhp power to the car propelling it to 145mph was available on DB4’s vantage version since March, 1962. With the DB5’s launch, it was adopted as a standard unit of power in September, 1963.

Wool pile carpets, twin fuel tanks, oil cooler, reclining seats, electric windows and the chrome wire wheels are a few parts of the DB5’s standard equipment. Other standard components include a fire extinguisher, trim of full leather in the cabin and the body built with the magnesium alloy according to the patented technique of the Superleggera. All the models of this car are provided with 2 doors of 2+2 configuration along with an automatic transmission from the Borg-Warner DG having 3-speed gears. The ZF 5-speed replaced the original 4-speed manual, which was then replaced by the Brog-Warner model before the DB5 was replaced by the DB6 model.
