Next-generation Audi R8 will get smaller engine

The next generation of the Audi R8 could include a smaller engine than a V8, revealed the head of Technical Development of the brand, Ulrich Hackenberg, the Geneva Motor Show .

The new R8, arriving in 2015, is based on the same general layout Lamborghini Hurac?n , according to Hackenberg, but wider and with a longer distance between axles.

The V8 and V10 engines will be transferred from the current R8 with the V10 closely associated with the new engine 5.2 Hurac?n. Like the Lamborghini, the R8 will have all-wheel drive and will be offered with a gearbox dual-clutch seven-speed.

"The engine and gearbox are the same, but with different applications," Hackenberg told Autocar the site. "The layout and suspension geometry will be different, so we can adjust different features"

For the official Audi at some point during the life cycle of the R8, the car will need a turbo engine and, in some countries, will also be necessary to reduce the capacity of the engines. "We have to find solutions for these markets, then, we are studying the possibility of introducing smaller engines."

"It's a big step change of 10 cylinders for four, however - there are some numbers from them that we could choose," said Hackenberg, indicating a six-cylinder engine may appear in the model.
