Mercedes discards three-cylinder engines in sedans with rear-wheel drive

The Mercedes-Benz ruled out the possibility of equipping its main models have rear-wheel drive with petrol and diesel three-cylinder, while rivals like BMW have adopted the technology of fuel economy.

"We analyzed the three-cylinder engines, but there are many commitments, such as refinement, and the savings are not as significant," said Bernhard Heil, head of engine development of the manufacturer, the Geneva Motor Show.

Heil said that Mercedes tested three-cylinder engines, but the vibration and loss of refinement, especially at low speeds when fuel efficiency can be maximized, are very great disadvantages.

However, Class A and B models with front wheel drive can receive three-cylinder engines powered by gasoline and / or diesel in the future, as well as a hybrid configuration with the installation of an electric motor / generator between the front wheels.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz is also working on a new diesel engine, which will have a capacity of 1.9 or 2.0 liters, making it smaller than the 2.1-liter supplies about 70% of all Mercedes-Benz models equipped with traction rear.
