GM is recalling Cobalt and G5 in the U.S.
General Motors announced on Thursday, 13, is recalling 778,562 cars after six people died in accidents, partly due to a failure in the air bag deployment. The call involving the Chevrolet Cobalt models, manufactured between 2005 and 2007, and Pontiac G5, produced in 2007.
In affected cars, the weight on your keychain and uneven or bumpy roads can cause the ignition key out of position "on", causing the shutdown of the engine and other components without notice, such as airbags.
There were five fatal frontal impact collisions, which took the lives of six people, although Alan Adler, GM spokesman, has stated that all five accidents occurred off the road and at high speed. In each case, however, the lack of airbags is not the only lethal factor.
"All these accidents occurred off-road and at high speeds, where the probability of death or serious injury was high regardless of air bag deployment. Moreover, the lack of use of seat belts and alcohol consumption were determining factors in some these cases, "Adler said.
There were still 17 other accidents in which airbags were not triggered and, according to a spokesman for GM, it is unclear whether any of these accidents were caused by the sudden shutdown of the engine.
Of the 778,562 vehicles affected by the problem, 619,122 are in the United States, while 153,310 are in Canada and Mexico are 6,130. General Motors said it would solve the problem by replacing the ignition switch and other affected parts free of charge, but, in the meantime, owners should remove non-essential items that add weight to keychains.
